The Yule Rune Project is Finished!
Here are the pictures of the rune project I started back in November. Please keep in mind I had never used a wood burning tool in my life. I don't think I did too badly. Ironically (Loki?) Ross, who the runes were gifted to, and his wife gave me a book on pyrography for Yule this year.

December holidays
I can't believe it's already December 1st. The holidays will be upon us before we realize it, and there is so much left to do.
I'm always interested to hear about other people's holiday traditions, so for anyone who might be reading this, I invite you to share yours via a comment below. For us, we celebrate both Yule and Christmas every year. We have baby Jesus and angels and Odin, Thor, and Frigga and a beautiful German blown glass Yule log hanging from our tree. Husband decorates our front porch with lights. I get a real evergreen wreath to hang from our door (we have an artificial tree due to the kittehs liking to climb). We often light candles in the dark of the evening. I bake lots of cookies and other treats. We send cards to friends and family. We always make a trip downtown to see the sights together, and have done so every year we have been a couple. That's one of my favorite traditions. We particularly love the world Santas at PPG place, and the gingerbread houses made by local schools and groups that are put on display.
This year many folks will be receiving handmade gifts and treats, because husband and I have been struggling financially, as many people are in this current economy. He's been very demoralized, because we both really enjoy giving gifts to our friends and family, and it's something that brings us a lot of joy. I assured him that we'll still be able to give something, it just may be much more humble this year than in years past. That's okay. As with so many other things, it is the intent and the spirit of our actions which is important, more so than the actual gift given. One gift I'm giving, which I previously mentioned, is the rune set for my friend. I will begin working on that soon, as the oak slices arrived in the mail and I went to Pat Catan's weekend before last and purchased a wood burning tool. I hope to post pictures soon of that project.

The Yule Rune Project
So, a very dear friend of mine who is also pagan commented to me at a 4th of July picnic this year that he is very interested in learning the runes (he's more into celtic-stuffs, ogham, etc.) and asked for my advice about purchasing a good set. I commented to him that he could buy a commercial set (there's nothing wrong with that, I have a commercial set which I bought when I was like 15 and still use), but that if he would be willing to exercise patience and wanted to save some dollars that I would make him a set of runes for his Yule gift. He appeared very excited about this and agreed that he could wait.
Realizing the other day that it is now November (eep!), I remembered my promise and began contemplating my options for making him a set. After some thought, I decided on getting some wooden discs and burning the runes into them. Due to all the rain/damp weather we've had until very recently, I decided not to gather the wood myself and instead ordered some oak slices off of Etsy from (of all places) a button maker (I didn't want to those commercial, perfectly round craft circles you can get at Michael's, that didn't seem right at all). The set she sold me has exactly 24 pieces. Seems like they were made for this purpose. They should be on their way to me soon. Next, I have to acquire a wood burning tool, which I should be able to get at a craft store. Then I need to practice using the tool so I'm comfortable with it. I will post pictures as this project commences. I'm very excited. I love crafting, but with my life the way it is right now it is hard to find time.
My personal rune set is also burned, but they are made from deer antler instead of wood. I did not make them, but they were handmade by the lovely pagan folks over at Vermorlian (look them up if you're not familiar, they have fantastic goodies for sale).
